Scott County Sheriff Office has partnered with Vitals™ Aware Services

Scott County Sheriff Office has partnered with Vitals Aware Services, a subscription-based app designed to help first responders properly interact with vulnerable adults. The Vitals app allows vulnerable adults or their caregivers to create personalized profiles with medical information, behavior triggers, and critical needs.

When a person wearing a Vitals Bluetooth device comes within 80-feet of a first responder, that responder will be notified through a smartphone about that person’s needs and how to best interact with them. Profiles are shared in real-time – and only temporarily – with police, first responders, and 911 dispatchers.

“Conditions such as mental illness, intellectual disabilities, or an autism spectrum disorder are often invisible, giving no clues to a responding deputy that the situation may need to be handled in a different way,” Sheriff Luke Hennen said in a statement. “The Vitals App will help bridge this communication gap, providing a safer experience for all involved.”

Information added to the app is determined by the individual and may include:

• medical information
• critical needs
• behavior triggers
• de-escalation techniques
• code words or a calming message from you

Profile information is temporarily shared with only authorized public safety, first responders, and 911 dispatchers.

How does it work?

Individuals and caregivers who subscribe to Vitals™ create a profile with critical information about the vulnerable person. The information provided is 100% voluntary and is only seen by authorized first responders and 911 dispatchers.

When the vulnerable person wears or carries a Vitals™ Bluetooth device and is close enough to interact with a first responder, the officer will get a notification on their smartphone about the person’s needs and how to best interact with them. It gives first responders a chance to make a positive and helpful connection.
