Golden Valley Police to begin using the Vitals™ App

Agency continues to add resources to serve a growing senior population

August 6, 2019 – Golden Valley, MN – Recognizing an increase in the number of mental health-related calls, and working to serve an increasing senior population, the Golden Valley Police Department (GVPD) is now using the Vitals™ App. More than 20 officers will use this technology to enhance police services. The announcement is timed to coincide with “Night to Unite”, as the Department reaches out to residents and encourages families to sign up for the service and collaborate in overall public safety efforts.

The Vitals™ App provides first responders with crucial information about vulnerable individuals, increasing the effectiveness of situational response and vastly expanding the potential for successful and safe resolutions. Vitals™ enrollees or their family members voluntarily provide the individualized information in this cutting-edge program revolving around technological innovation.

“We’re excited because Vitals™ will help us close the gap between the unknown and the known, as our officers respond to some of our most sensitive and difficult calls. Last year we added a Community Health Officer, so we are committed to serving populations that may require special care, empathy and understanding. We truly value the information provided by family members and caregivers to help us continue to achieve successful resolutions as we respond to our community’s needs,” Chief Jason Sturgis said.

Golden Valley is home for 21,580 residents and more than 9,000 households. Recent surveys show the largest age demographic within the city is between the ages of 55 and 64.

About Vitals™ Aware Services

Vitals™ works by equipping first responders with information voluntarily provided by Vitals™ enrollees. Law enforcement and other first responders download the Vitals™ First Responder app on their cellphones. The service allows a vulnerable person to register online, then wear a beacon that takes the form of a keychain, necklace, debit card or bracelet. An Android phone can also serve as the beacon. When a Vitals™ user comes within 80 feet of an officer or first responder equipped with the service, the officer will get a notification about the person’s diagnosis and how they may best interact with them.
